The 32-year-old, who was released by Manchester United in the summer, will join Tony Pulis' side subject to approval from the Premier League.

The striker moved to Old Trafford back in 2009 as Sir Alex Ferguson looked to bolster his attacking options following Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80 million move to Real Madrid.

Despite netting a dramatic winner in the Red Devils' 4-3 win over local rivals Manchester City, he failed to establish himself at the club and made just 31 league appearances, scoring five times. Speculation over recent days suggested a return to Liverpool could happen but the Potters have completed a deal to bring him to the Britannia Stadium.

Owen has scored 40 times for England in 89 appearances but has failed to represent his country in recent years.
The 28-year-old shined as the Blaugrana finished second in La Liga and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

He also performed admirably as Spain retained their European Championship crown in Ukraine and Poland in the summer and was subsequently named the best player at the tournament.

And he has now scooped another award, pipping the Argentine and Portuguese forwards, despite their respective 73 and 60-goal campaigns.

"Without my team-mates at the Spanish national team and Barcelona I wouldn't have won this individual trophy," he commented.

His captain at club level, Carles Puyol, was quick to congratulate the Albacete-born schemer on his official Twitter page.

"Congratulations, Andres!! You deserve this."

Iniesta received 19 votes from the panel, while Messi and Ronaldo were both given the nod by 17 voters.

In last year's edition of the award, Messi was named as the best player in Europe, with fellow Barcelona star Xavi and Ronaldo finishing in second and third place respectively. The 26-year-old Hulk will wear the No.29 shirt for Luciano Spalletti's side, who currently sit top of the Russian Premier League after seven games.

Hours after announcing a deal for the Brazilian, Zenit also confirmed the signing of Belgian midfielder Witsel, who will take the No.28 jersey.

"It's now official. Both players had signed five-year deals," Zenit spokesman Dmitry Tsimmerman was reported as saying by Rueters.

"We were trying to sign them before the September 3 deadline for the Champions League so they can play for us in that competition as well as the Russian league."

Having cut his teeth in Japanese football with Kawasaki Fontale, Consadole Sapporo and Tokyo Verdy, Hulk moved to Os Dragoes in 2008 and helped the club to three league titles, three Tacas de Portugal and the Uefa Cup.

He has won 13 Brazil caps since making his debut in 2009, and was part of the Selecao's Olympic team that claimed silver in London.

Witsel, meanwhile, had been heavily linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, but the former Standard Liege man, who has represented Belgium at every age group, has now made the move to Zenit.

Benfica confirmed on their official website that the fee paid for their prized asset was the contractual release clause of €40m.
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo made the shock claim that he was unhappy with the club after he refused to celebrate his 149th and 150th Blancos goals in the win over Granada on Sunday.

The Portuguese was the catalyst behind his side's first win of the new Liga season, but his lack of elation on the back of two landmark strikes was the main talking point after the game, which he explained after full time.

"I'm sad because of a professional issue and the club know why. That's why I didn't celebrate the goals, because I'm not happy. The people [at the club] know why," he told reporters after the match.

"It's nothing to do with Iniesta [winning European player award]. I won't talk about this any more and I will concentrate on Portugal for now. There are more important things [than this]."

Los Blancos duo were coy when asked about the news that their team-mate could be moving away from Santiago Bernabeu in the near future, and in turn confirmed that they were content in the Spanish capital.
“I speak for myself when I say I am happy here,” Alonso told AS. “Each person feels as each person wants.

“I think many of us are in a fortunate position where we are part of a group that has made history, but we don’t want to rest on our laurels. We just want to have the chance to win more trophies.”
Argentina international Higuain also commented on the situation surrounding his forward partner, saying: “I cannot speak about it because I know nothing. The Barcelona superstar claims that it has nothing to do with him, and avoided speaking about the situation when asked about the talented winger.

“That's something Ronaldo said,” he told a press conference in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. “There's no reason to ask me about what he says and vice-versa. It's nothing to do with me. I do not have to answer questions about that.”

Instead, the Argentine striker chose to focus on his country's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru, for which Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero will be missing.

“No Aguero? That's bad for the team. Losing a player like that is bad for any team. Personally, I love playing next to Kun.

“I respect the coach's decision [to leave out Tevez]. If Carlos returns to the team, he will be welcome, but the decision is the coach's.”

The 25-year-old concluded by confirming that he is enjoying playing for Argentina, despite rumours that the fans are yet to be won over by the Blaugrana man.

“The team is playing well, and I am happy with how things are going. We are winning games and winning them playing good football. Roberto Mancini continued to play down Manchester City’s title chances despite leapfrogging Manchester United at the top of the table with a 1-0 win over the reigning Premier League champions.

Vincent Kompany's header in first-half stoppage-time was all that separated the teams, but they outplayed the visitors for the majority of the match. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were denied a single shot on target at the Etihad Stadium, and Mancini was convinced the victory was well earned.

"I think that we deserved to win this game," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"We scored, we had chances [and] we played well. We had a chance to score a second goal.

"I don’t think they had a chance a score. It was a good performance. It was a difficult game because United are a top team."

The Blues have to travel to Newcastle United next Sunday before facing QPR on the final weekend of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

He said: "We are happy but I think that next Sunday we’ll have another difficult game."

The former Inter Milan boss brushed off suggestions he should publicly back his team as contenders for the title now for his supporters’ sake.

The Italian added: "I don’t think that it’s important what I can say for our supporters or my players. It is important that we work well.

"We go to play Newcastle on Sunday - [Manchester United] play an easy game against Swansea.

"For this reason I don’t think it changes [anything] for us. For now, we are top of the league but I think that United have a light advantage yet."

The match began awkwardly and it looked like the players were going to head in at the break with a 0-0 scoreline until Kompany’s powerful header, shrugging off his marker Chris Smalling.

"[The goal was at] the perfect time for the first half," Mancini admitted.

"But it was important to score another goal in the second half but like this you have a risk [the opposition can equalise]."
The Dutchman notched his 28th league goal on Saturday against Stoke and has scored nearly half of the Gunners' 66 league strikes this season.

Benayoun feels the other members of Arsene Wenger side need to start contributing more but conceded it is too late in the season to make a telling impact.

He told reporters: “We have two games to go and I concede we have been over-relying on him in terms of goal-scoring but that’s difficult to change now until the end of the season.”

The Israeli international has likened the situation to Fernando Torres' free-scoring form during his time on Merseyside and believes the two players are very similar.

Benayoun also feels that Arsenal must do their utmost to keep the Dutchman at the club for the foreseeable future amidst rumours of interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.

He added: “I was lucky to play with some of the great strikers in my career and Robin at the moment is one of the best in the world.

“It was the same for me when I was with Fernando and he was on fire at Liverpool, scoring a lot of goals. For me, they are at the same level - two of the best strikers in the world. They are very similar because you can look at their record of scoring goals.

“Fernando at Liverpool, he scored in a lot of goals, especially when he had a player like Stevie Gerrard playing behind him helping him.

“With Robin, we know we must give him the ball to the right place and he will score like he has done all season. Everyone knows it’s important to keep him. Each club wants to keep their best players and Robin is our best player.”
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-65560063600449052502012-04-30T09:26:00.000-07:002012-04-30T09:26:06.602-07:00Arsenal sign Lukas Podolski

The Gunners have been linked with the German international throughout the season, and his club have now confirmed he will switch to the Premier League this summer
Koln striker Lukas Podolski will join Arsenal in the summer for an undisclosed fee, the Bundesliga club has announced.

n an official statement on the club’s official website confirming the deal, executive board chairman, Claus Horstmann admitted that Koln had offered the player new “competitive” terms on his contract, but with just one year left on his current deal, a transfer was best for the team.

Horstmann said: “We deeply regret his step, which is not a decision against [the club] but for the good of his own career. Koln were prepared to extend Lukas Podolski's contract on the basis of a competitive offer.

“Nonetheless, this early transfer decision offers scope and planning security for the next season. We will jump at this opportunity to reinvest these transfer earnings back into our team's quality and into the promotion of our youth squads.

“Lukas has helped the club in many difficult situations, Lukas has left a mark on Koln's reputation and we feel the need to thank him for numerous great football experiences at Koln.”

The move has long been in the offing, with the striker's former boss Stale Solbakken admitting just two weeks ago that a move to England was on the cards and Gunners' manager Arsene Wenger publicly stating his admiration for the former Bayern Munich player in March.

And Wenger, himself, speaking to Arsenal's official website, spoke of his happiness at securing the signature of the "top-class player": "We are delighted to secure the deal for Lukas and see him as an important part of our future. He is a top-class player, a very good finisher and a proven performer at club and international level. He is a very strong player and will provide us with good attacking options.

"We are happy to have made this signing early and we are looking forward to watching Lukas contribute at the European Championships over the summer, a level where he has already made 95 caps at the age of 26. That is a phenomenal record and just shows his quality as a player.”

Ahead of the move, the 26-year-old has thanked the Koln fans before his summer switch to the Emirates Stadium: “The move to Arsenal provides a great opportunity for me to gain experience in international competitions at a European top club.

“I have made this decision not against Koln but for this great opportunity and the good of my own individual development.

“This was not an easy decision for me at all, as Koln, our fans and the city are something special for me.

“I will always carry Koln in my heart. We need to pool our strengths now and have to be fully focussed on our survival in the Bundesliga.”

The striker, who has notched 43 goals in just 95 games for the Germain international side, spoke of his delight at joining Arsenal on the club's official website: "I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal and to play in the Premier League. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history.

"There are many top quality players at Arsenal and the style of football which the team plays is fantastic. I’m proud to become an Arsenal player and am looking forward to playing my first match at Emirates Stadium and doing my best for all the Arsenal fans."

Podolski will stay at Koln for the remainder of the campaign to help their ongoing fight against relegation before moving to England.
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-69683063747234929382012-04-30T09:21:00.001-07:002012-04-30T09:21:45.388-07:00Karanka salutes Real Madrid's character after Sevilla win: Players were tired and sad but still did what they had to do

Aitor Karanka admitted that Real Madrid had not been at their best in Sunday's vital victory over Sevilla but heaped praise on the players for overcoming fatigue and Champions League heartbreak to move to within touching distance of the Liga title.

Los Blancos went into the game against the Rojiblancos still reeling after their penalty shoot-out failure against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

However, they still managed to see off Sevilla thanks to a double from Karim Benzema after Cristiano Ronaldo had opened the scoring in the Spanish capital.

"There are now fewer games left [three] and we had to win today after Wednesday's upset," Karanka told Madrid's official website. "I'll say it again: this team deserves to win the title.

"Regardless of winning the league title or not, these players have the character and mentality of champions.

"They were tired and sad today, and we could have played better, but we won. We did what we had to do."

Having pulled 10 points clear of second-placed Barcelona, Madrid now only need to win one of their three remaining games to secure the title, but they will be crowned champions should the Blaugrana lose at Ray Vallecano on Sunday night.

Karanka does not care how Los Blancos realise their dream but he admitted that he would have no problem having to finish the job themselves against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday evening.

"It's obviously important to win the Spanish league for everything it entails and for how hard we've worked for it. The sooner we win, the better, really," he confessed.

"But it would be nice to win at a great venue like San Mames against Athletic Bilbao because they are having a great season.

"We're all only thinking about winning the game we need to celebrate as soon as possible.

"Our men are in fantastic form and we know how tired they are. The exhaustion they had after facing Barcelona and Bayern in such a short time is eclipsed by their confidence.

"They performed very well on Saturday and made a great effort on Wednesday, so today's clash was sort of like a reward."

Amidst all of the talk about Barcelona's lack of a 'Plan B' in recent days, Karanka stated that they too only know one way to play the game.

"We only have a Plan A here, and we'll stick to it until we take the points we need," he stated. "We also only had a Plan A last season under different circumstances, so it focused on scoring more goals and helping Cristiano increase his tally."
The £50 million striker scored his first treble for the Stamford Bridge outfit as the Blues hammered QPR 6-1 to follow up their magnificent draw in Barcelona

As Fernando Torres wheeled away to celebrate his hat-trick goal, the Chelsea owner’s face broke into a broad grin and he high-fived his mates in the executive box from where he was watching the rout unfold.

The Russian never talks in public but this spontaneous gesture spoke volumes for his feelings about the redemption of the club’s record signing.

The other Chelsea goals were marked by the stock Abramovich reaction to a goal from the team he created with his largesse – a beaming smile followed by warm applause.

Like the 41,000-odd other souls at Stamford Bridge, the billionaire knew the extra significance of Chelsea’s fifth goal of the game.

It proved that the cloud that has hovered over Torres for 14 months at the club has finally given way to a ray of light and the promise of brighter times ahead. Each of his three strikes was dispatched with complete conviction and certainty.

Roberto Di Matteo’s side were already 2-0 up and playing with ferocious intensity before Torres slipped into gear and moved into space to collect Salomon Kalou’s deliciously struck first-time pass in the 19th minute and then effortlessly round Paddy Kenny before angling his shot into the net.

It was a run he might not even have made a few weeks ago as the endless search for his mojo continued. The finish almost certainly would have been out of his range.

Six minutes later, Torres had his second. After Nedum Onuoha and Kenny made a complete hash of a clearance, the number nine gleefully latched on to a loose ball and lashed it into the net with his left foot.

With his confidence soaring, Torres looked like grabbing his first hat-trick since 2009 every time Chelsea marched towards the QPR goal. The moment finally came in the 64th minute when Juan Mata, his hardly any less outstanding countryman, put him through on goal with an inch-perfect pass.

The rank-and-file held their breath. So did those in a top-tier executive box. Torres opened up his body and side-footed it into the corner with the precision of a surgeon completing a life-saving operation.

The Bridge rose to acclaim one whose suffering in a blue shirt has been so public at times that it has made for painful viewing.

By rediscovering the target with four goals in five days, the born-again Spaniard has not only renewed his confidence and injected a shot into the arm of his Chelsea career but showed what a difference he could make to his club’s double dream.
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-1894970963703143792012-04-30T09:12:00.001-07:002012-04-30T09:12:26.366-07:00Barcelona displayed strength and enthusiasm against Rayo Vallecano, claims Pedro

Pedro says Barcelona's 7-0 demolition of Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Sunday is a reminder to their doubters that his club are not a spent force and will only get stronger as the season draws to a close.

The Blaugrana endured a week to forget after they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Clasico last weekend to all but hand the Liga title to the Blancos, while they were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea at the semi-final stage.

The announcement of Pep Guardiola's departure at the end of the campaign has only increased the consensus that Barca's period of dominance may be coming to an end, but Pedro insists their seven-goal haul against Rayo was just what was needed.

"After a week, we are still a little sad about our elimination from the Champions League and the match against Real Madrid, but this victory shows that the team still exhibits strength and enthusiasm," said Pedro after the game.

"We are playing with rhythm and confidence again. I'm happy about the result."

Pedro also vowed that his team-mates will try to win the Copa del Rey against Athletic Bilbao on May 25 as a form of repayment for their outgoing coach, and hailed Lionel Messi for his double against the league strugglers.

"We will prepare properly for the end of the season and try to win the Copa del Rey as a parting gift for Guardiola and the fans.

"Messi has once again proved to be the best goalscorer around and he deserves this recognition."
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-42488390429852818382012-04-30T09:10:00.001-07:002012-04-30T09:10:38.544-07:00Barcelona will continue to be competitive under Vilanova, affirms Guardiola after beating Rayo Vallecano

Pep Guardiola has assured Barcelona fans that the club will continue to enjoy success under coach in-elect Tito Vilanova next season after their 7-0 mauling of Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

The Blaugrana boss announced his decision to step down from his role at the end of the campaign with his assistant being immediately confirmed as his successor, and after the match against Rayo Vallecano, he stated his belief that the team will only realise their vast potential under his right-hand man.

"This team is young, Tito knows the players well and I'm confident that Barcelona will continue to be competitive [under him]," he told the press.

"I'm grateful for all the praise in response to my departure, although I didn't pass away. I'll still be around."

Guardiola then reacted to the goal celebration initiated by Thiago Alcantara and Dani Alves in the aftermath of the fifth goal scored by Barca, and apologised for the incident which some Rayo fans took offence to.

"We, as a club, apologise for the celebration, as it did not reflect the attitude of Barca players. It won't happen again," he said.

However, the former Spain midfielder ended on a positive note, as he was full of praise for second-string goalkeeper Jose Pinto and winger Pedro, who made an emphatic return to form with a double against the Liga strugglers, as well as a further two assists to his name.

"If Pinto doesn't get injured, he'll play in the Copa del Rey final," he continued. "He helped us to get to the final for the third time in four years."

"I am also very happy with Pedro's performance. He is one of my favourite players as we started out together in the fourth division."
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder is finally fit again after tearing his ACL in training last September and is now looking forward to proving himself to Tito Vilanova

Barcelona's Ibrahim Afellay was ecstatic after making his return to competitive action after seven months out with a knee injury in Sunday's La Liga rout of Rayo Vallecano.

Afellay was both relieved and thrilled to be back on the field, though he insisted that he never doubted he would don the Barca jersey again this term.

“You know the moment will come some day but you don’t know when," the Netherlands international is quoted as saying by his club's official website. "I’m so happy to return.

“I just want to play football. I’ve worked hard during the team’s training sessions and I’m very pleased [to be back]."

Meanwhile, Afellay expressed his disappointment at coach Pep Guardiola's decision to stand down at the end of the season, but argued that the Catalans have the ideal replacement in current assistant boss Tito Vilanova.

"It's a shame because Pep for me is one of the best coaches in the world," the 26-year-old attacker said of Guardiola.

"But Tito is about equal because they have worked together many years and I think we will continue just the same."

Afellay, who has been capped 36 times by his country, joined Barca from PSV during last year's January transfer window.
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-24537990962908520992012-04-30T09:04:00.000-07:002012-04-30T09:04:45.033-07:00Rayo Vallecano 0-7 Barcelona: Messi and Pedro both net doubles as Catalan giants romp to resounding victory

The front three were on fire for the visitors, who rang up a century of league goals en route to a comprehensive triumph, but Real Madrid can still clinch the title midweek

Barcelona ensured that they suffered no hangover from their week from hell with a resounding 7-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas.

It has been a harrowing eight days for the Catalans, who saw their Primera Division and Champions League hopes eliminated by Real Madrid and Chelsea, not to mention the announcement of coach Pep Guardiola's departure at the end of the season.

However, they responded in some style against the outmatched side from the capital, with two goals each from Lionel Messi and Pedro alongside strikes from Seydou Keita and Thiago Alcantara and an own goal by Roberto Correa reducing the gap to Madrid at the top of the league back to seven points.

The title may still be out of reach with only three games left to play, but Barca at least delayed the celebrations of their old foes to Wednesday with a smashing victory that saw them cross the 100-goal tally in the league, while Messi's 43rd league goal drew him level with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Pichichi race.

All eyes were on Guardiola in the dugout, and the soon to be ex-Barca coach rang the changes from midweek, with six players rested from the XI that featured against Chelsea.
The Catalans were desperate to put on a show for their coach and shell-shocked fans, and stormed into the lead just after a quarter of an hour. Alexis Sanchez was the architect, with his wonderful diagonal pass freeing Pedro on the right, who squared to Messi to guide home from a few yards out.

Rayo almost responded immediately after the restart, but Jose Pinto was alert to push away Diego Costa’s header from a free-kick at the far post.

The chance passed them by, and Barca were 2-0 up after 26 minutes. Keita sent Sanchez through on goal, and the Chilean’s finish from a tight angle was diverted into the net by Correa.

The visitors were dominant, finding holes in the Rayo midfield and defensive lines at will. However, they were indebted to Pinto once more just after half an hour, the stand-in keeper tipping away Roberto Trashorras’ free kick at full stretch.

Messi’s brilliance soon put the Catalans out of sight six minutes before the interval, the Argentine waltzing past multiple challenges on the edge of the box before slipping in Keita, who made no mistake from close range.

Barely a minute into the second-half, it was 4-0. Sanchez again did the hard work, as he broke free down the left before squaring to Messi inside the area. His finish bounced back off the crossbar, but Pedro was on hand to stroke home the rebound.

It should have been a fifth within minutes after Thiago was picked out in a great position inside the area, but the young midfielder put his effort the wrong side of the post.

The match was well and truly over, but Pinto was forced into another spectacular save with 20 minutes to go, getting fingertips to a powerful drive by Alhassane Bangoura.

Thiago added a fifth with just over 10 minutes to go, with a simple header from close range following great work out wide by substitute Dani Alves.

It was 6-0 after 87 minutes, Pedro side-footing coolly into the back of the net after getting on the end of a clever lifted pass from Messi.

Messi rounded off matters in injury time with powerful finish from a quintessential Barca team move, a goal that moves him on terms with Cristiano Ronaldo in the quest for the Pichichi.

Next up for Barca is a visit from Malaga, while Rayo visit Mallorca, with both matches taking place next Wednesday. Madrid though, can clinch the title with a win away to Athletic Bilbao on the same day.
Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-7166835016430019162012-04-28T11:48:00.001-07:002012-04-28T11:48:42.159-07:00Stoke 1-1 Arsenal: Van Persie to the rescue but Gunners miss chance to tighten grip on third

The visitors were unable to break down a resolute Potters defence as both sides settle for a point, meaning Wenger's men miss the chance to pull

Arsenal missed out on the chance to pull away in third place as they had to rely on Robin van Persie to earn them a point in a 1-1 draw with Stoke.

The home side took the lead early in the game as Peter Crouch rose to head home a Matthew Etherington cross, but five minutes later Van Persie earned his side a point with a simple tap-in following an inch-perfect Tomas Rosicky cross.

Both sides made two changes ahead of kick-off with Jermaine Pennant and Dean Whitehead returning for Stoke in place of Wilson Palacios and the injured Andy Wilkinson. The full-back picked up a groin injury against Newcastle so Ryan Shotton dropped back into defence and Pennant took up his place on the right wing.

Arsenal named a starting line-up missing speedsters Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with Yossi Benayoun and Gervinho were recalled to provide support to the prolific Van Persie in attack.

The visitors were quickly into their stride and created two good opportunities in the opening eight minutes for Benayoun and Van Persie. The Israeli was released by the Dutchman in the sixth minute but his low shot from inside the penalty area lacked power and Asmir Begovic was able to save with an outstretched left hand.

Two minutes later Van Persie had his first sight of goal but he too was denied by Begovic. Tomas Rosicky delivered an inch-perfect cross onto the head of the unmarked striker at the back post but the Bosnian stopper made an excellent reaction save to turn the ball behind.

The Gunners were made to rue those misses in the 10th minute as the home side took the lead with their first attempt on goal. Etherington was found on the left wing and he delivered a the ball right onto the head of Crouch and the striker made no mistake, jumping above his marker and heading into the bottom corner.

However Stoke's lead lasted just five minutes as Arsenal equalised through Van Persie. Rosicky found more space on the left wing and delivered a lovely cross behind the Stoke defence to find the run of the striker and the Dutchman had the simple task of tapping it into the net.

After such a bright start to the game the rest of the opening period was fairly uneventful as both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances and neither goalkeeper was forced into a real save. Gervinho found himself in some good situations but his final touch seemed to always let him down, while at the other end the Arsenal defence coped well with the dangerous balls put into their penalty area by Pennant.

The second half began in lively fashion and five minutes in Arsenal had a great chance to go ahead through Van Persie. A typically neat and flowing move from the Gunners ended up with Bacary Sagna being released down the right wing, his low cross was perfect for the Dutch striker to fire a diving header towards goal but Begovic saved well down to his right.

The home side were really struggling to create any chances as the Arsenal defence remained resolute, and despite plenty of effort and desire the clinical final touch was just eluding them.

Tony Pulis’ decision to introduce Cameron Jerome late in the game for Pennant was met with a few boos from the home crowd but it was nearly a master stroke as the striker found himself with a clear shot at goal, his effort was on target but Szczesny saved well and Arsenal were able to clear.

The Gunners pushed for a late winner, and even threw Marouane Chamakh up front to support Van Persie but Stoke remained resolute and held on for a well-deserved point.Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-37760131207505488512012-04-28T11:35:00.000-07:002012-04-28T11:35:09.886-07:00'Walcott is definitely available for Euro 2012' - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Theo Walcott will be available for England at Euro 2012.

The Gunners' winger picked up a hamstring injury against Chelsea and was initially expected to miss the rest of the season but Wenger believes the former Southampton man could feature in his side's final game of the season at West Brom.

The Frenchman told reporters: "It is less serious than we thought. He has a small chance to play in the last game [of the season].

"For the Euros, he is definitely available."

Wenger also believes that the rest Walcott has enjoyed during his injury lay-off could benefit him in the tournament in Ukraine and Poland.

"I think in fact the injury of Walcott is good news for England because he just has a little rest," The 62-year-old explained.

"He had enough competition and now he has a little rest before going there so he should be in a good frame of mind and physically fit."

Walcott has enjoyed a fine season on the right for Arsenal, scoring 11 goals in 50 appearances and his manager believes the 23-year-old's good performances lead to criticism when he can't replicate them.

Wenger concluded: "Theo gets criticism because he raises the level of expectation so much that when he has a disappointing game or doesn't make the difference people straight away go at him because they expect something special."Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-82540180257171125972012-04-28T11:29:00.000-07:002012-04-28T11:30:26.248-07:00Sunderland boss O’Neill surprised by Mancini's ‘not difficult’ commentsThe Manchester City manager implied that Swansea City and the Black Cats were 'easy' opponents for title-chasers United, but the Northern Irishman points out recent results

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has expressed his surprise at Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini describing the Black Cats as “not difficult” opponents.

The Italian had implied that Manchester United would win the Premier League regardless of the derby on Monday as their last two matches, against Swansea City and the Wearsiders, were easier than City’s.

Swansea coach Brendan Rodgers has already played down the comments, but O’Neill told the Daily Telegraph: “It took me by surprise because I had to check that the teams they [United] have to play beat Manchester City, like Swansea and ourselves.”

The Swans overcame Mancini’s men in March, whilst Sunderland beat them 1-0 on New Year’s Day before coming from 3-1 down to draw three apiece at the Etihad Stadium on March 31.

"We have taken four points off Manchester City, but they have actually lost five against us this season. He had obviously forgotten to check the fixtures list properly,” O’Neill argued.

"I will remember it for the next four years. I don't have an email address for him, but I really thought about sending him one to tell him to keep an eye on what he says in the future.

"I don't know what his insinuation was, but if he had any idea about the league at all he would know that the integrity of the league is pretty good."Serverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01932835371735680104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2603191717773376914.post-60664804058484231992012-04-28T08:48:00.001-07:002012-04-28T08:48:59.186-07:00Chelsea in the Champions League final is awful, says Frank de Boer

Ajax coach Frank de Boer has voiced his displeasure with the way Chelsea eliminated Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Blues edged the Catalans 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, before delivering a rigid defensive performance in the second leg to hold Pep Guardiola's men to a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou to confirm a date in the final with Bayern Munich.

"This is terrible. How the hell is this still possible? It is one way of achieving success, but not ours [Ajax's]. I would rather go down fighting, De Boer told Algemeen Dagblad.

The Barcelona legend then took a dig at Chelsea attacker Juan Mata, who he believes was very underwhelming in the tie.

"If you ask Mata 'now you have twice played against Barcelona, what have you done?' he will say 'I defended blindly and booted balls forward'. But Mata is supposed to be a technical player, right?"

The Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Chelsea is set to be played on May 19 at the Allianz Arena.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini remains downbeat on his side’s chances of wrenching the Premier League title away from Manchester United.

City could pull ahead of their neighbours on goal difference at the top if they win their crucial derby match on Monday, but the Italian still expects the Red Devils to triumph.

“I am not surprised because in football, until you finish the championship or every game, anything can happen,” Mancini told reporters when quizzed on United’s slip from a clear lead to allow his side back into the race.

“But my opinion is always the same - I think they have more chance than us.

"We play the derby [on] Monday and then afterwards Newcastle, that will be a very tough game, then after that QPR.

"Instead, United will play against Swansea and Sunderland and I think for them they will be two easy games.

"I think [even] if we win this game, they are favourites."

Mancini’s opposite number, Sir Alex Ferguson, has labelled Monday’s match “the derby of all derbies”, and the 47-year-old concurred with the assessment.

“After 50 years, Manchester United and Manchester City are playing for the title [once more]. For this reason I agree with him,” he added.

There could also be a return in store for controversial striker Mario Balotelli, whom Mancini had previously implied would not play again this season after his red card against Arsenal. However, with his ban at an end, the coach hinted that he could be involved.

“We have another two training sessions but all the players are available,” said the former Inter boss.

“I have 48 hours until the game, I have time to decide for every player.”

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed that he studied the way Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo likes to take his penalties.

The Germany international saved efforts from the ex-Manchester United forward and Kaka, before Sergio Ramos blasted his attempt over the bar to give Bastian Schweinsteiger the opportunity to send Die Roten to the tournament decider against Chelsea.

"I always prepare myself for such situations," Neuer told Bild. "Our goalkeeping coach, Toni Tapalovic, showed me on his laptop before the match how Ronaldo usually takes his penalties.

"I learned that Ronaldo prefers to send the ball low to his left. In the penalty shoot-out, I was convinced that he would aim for his favourite spot."

The German keeper then mocked Ramos for his failed attempt, saying: "I did not know that he would prefer to send it over the bar."

Pep Guardiola has distanced himself from the vacant Chelsea job after confirming he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season.

Guardiola’s recent decision to announce his resignation as Barcelona boss has increased speculation that he will take over as manager of the Premier League club next season.

However the Spaniard has confirmed he is not interested in the job as he is to take a break from the game.

"I never met with Roman Abramovich nor any Chelsea representative. I'm not interesting in coaching now," he told reporters.

"My desire is to make other things, maybe sometime in the future I will go back to a bench, but I don't know at the moment.

"I don't have anything to prove, I'm not interested in proving myself abroad and will go away from football at the moment."

Guardiola's apparent non-interest in the job at Stamford Bridge may strengthen current interim boss, Roberto Di Matteo's own claim to the Chelsea hot seat.

Di Matteo has turned Chelsea’s season around as they knocking out Barcelona to reach the Champions League final and also securing a spot in the FA Cup final.

Di Matteo was reportedly only seen as high as third choice in the mind of Abramovich, however, with the Spaniard's recent comments, he may now become one fo the clear favourites.

So, what next for Guardiola? Well, it seems as if he is set to take a well-earned break from the stress and strain of coaching one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Several prominent figures from within the game have already taken to the internet to express their gratitude to the 41-year-old for cultivating one of the finest sides of all time.

"Well done to Guardiola," exclaimed former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Twitter. "Football that I have never seen before! Magic..."

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was next to weigh in, singing the Spaniard's praises but at the same time wondering how on earth he will top what he has achieved in Catalunya.
"We have to thank #Guardiola for the great years of football he gave us with Barcelona. I will take my hat off.

"Difficult to go somewhere else for Pep. It can only go downhill. Or he has to take #Messi with him," he continued.

However, despite his admiration for Guardiola, the former Stamford Bridge idol would not like to see the Spaniard take up residence in London.

"I like Pep as a coach but I want #RDM as coach for CHELSEA."

It wasn't long before the men who had served under Pep began to post their own online tributes to their departing boss.

"Thanks so much for everything, Pep. You've taught us the way. A huge hug," Blaugrana skipper Carles Puyol announced.

Soon after, Puyol's central defensive partner Gerard Pique left a similar message to Guardiola on his own Twitter account.

"Thanks a lot Pep for giving us so much ... Four years full of victories, happy times, and above all, lessons in football."

Thiago Alcantara, who rose through the Barcelona ranks and made his mark in first team under Guardiola, was next to express his gratitude towards his coach.

"You reached the summit of football and you'll stay there forever. We're eternally grateful. THANK YOU PEP!" the Spain international wrote.

Cesc Fabregas had always been vocal in his admiration for Guardiola, and he too heaped praise on his boyhood hero, but added that he was looking forward to working closely with new coach Tito Vilanova.

"Although we've only been together for one year, it feels as though it has been much longer. Pep, my childhood idol, and my inspiration as coach. Thanks for the time we've spent together, I'll value it forever.

"For Tito, I wish the best in this new opportunity that football has given to him. We were together when I was a kid, and he is not just a great person but also an excellent manager."

Andres Iniesta, meanwhile, logged into Facebook to comment on an old photo of a jovial Guardiola giving him some sage advice during a training session.

"Today our manager has given us the news and just I want to give thanks to him and his team for these years," the midfielder stated. "But we cannot forget that season is still in active."

Indeed, Barca's players will be hoping to give their outgoing coach the send-off he deserves by prolonging the Liga title race for as long as possible and beating Athletic Bilbao in next month's Copa del Rey final to secure Guardiola a 14th title in four wonderful seasons.
